Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at these Resorts in Mexico

Main Destination Mexico

Cinco de Mayo, the “Fifth of May” is one of the most celebratory days on the Mexican calendar – and a group of resorts in Mexico is laying on the festivities for guests.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Don’t confuse it with Mexico's Independence Day, which is on September 16. Cinco de Mayo has spread from its origins in the state of Puebla in Mexico, where the battle took place, to the United States.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed with military parades, reenactments of the Battle of Puebla, and cultural performances. However, it's not a national holiday in Mexico and is not celebrated as widely as in the United States, where it’s one of many people’s favorite Mexican festivals.

In the US, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. It's marked with parades, parties, festivals, traditional Mexican music and dance performances, and of course, delicious Mexican food and drinks. Many people also wear traditional Mexican attire or the colors of the Mexican flag (green, white, and red) to show their solidarity and appreciation for Mexican culture.

Celebrations often include activities like:
  1. Food: Enjoying Mexican cuisine such as tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, guacamole, and salsa.
  2. Drinks: Drinking Mexican beverages like margaritas, tequila, and Mexican beer.
  3. Music and Dance: Listening to traditional Mexican music like mariachi and banda, and participating in folkloric dances like the Jarabe Tapatio (Mexican Hat Dance).
  4. Decorations: Decorating with traditional Mexican symbols such as papel picado (colorful paper cutouts), sombreros, and piñatas.

While the US may have overtaken Mexico in using Cinco de Mayo to celebrate Mexican culture, history, and the contributions of Mexican-Americans to the United States, one Mexican resort company is helping guests return to Cinco de Mayo’s roots at its resorts throughout the country.

Velas resorts are gearing up for Cinco de Mayo with culinary delights, traditional games and entertainment.
